My Bayou Town

I grew up down there
And I always go back
Where memories pile
Like cotton in a sack.
In My Bayou Town

The summers too short
The school year too long
All the girls were pretty
And the boys all strong
In My Bayou Town

Told stories on the banks
Built fires in the fields
We grew up together
And shared each other’s meals
In My Bayou Town

We hollered for the tigers
And we cheered for the Saints
We sprayed the Johnson grass
And we killed the fire ants
In My Bayou Town

Down in Louisiana
Nowhere near New Orleans
We paddled on the water
And had fun by any means

Parade on the main street
A party ridin’ round
Just another weekend
In my happy bayou town

Fridays we were gathered
To watch football on the grass
Some beat the drums
And others blew the brass
In My Bayou Town

We partied in the night
And we worked all day
Yards needed cleaning
And barns needed hay
In My Bayou Town

We’d often hear the sound
Of a combine in the cotton
And the crops being sprayed
Is a sight I’ve not forgotten
In My Bayou Town

Daddy’s going huntin’
And Momma’s cooking rice
It’s life like this we yearn for
Because it’s really nice
In My Bayou Town

Down in Louisiana
Nowhere near New Orleans
We paddled on the water
And had fun by any means

Parade on the main street
A party ridin’ round
Just another weekend
In my happy bayou town
